CALL FOR PAPERS
"Süleymaniye Symposium 2: The Grand Bazaar"
Ranked first among the neighborhoods that give life to Istanbul, Süleymaniye is a place where many firsts are created in various fields such as history, civilization, social life, architecture, urban planning, cultural history, scientific studies, religion, and religious history. Many names and areas can be associated with Süleymaniye. However, the economic life and the economy that surrounds it, which are common to all of these areas, have a special significance.
When Süleymaniye and economic life are mentioned, the first center that comes to mind is the "Grand Bazaar." Today, the "Grand Bazaar" has evolved beyond being just a space and has become a cultural concept that encompasses many thoughts. The "Grand Bazaar" is a center of civilization, a bridge between history and the future, and, beyond all this, a "manuscript" waiting to be read repeatedly. These characteristics have made it necessary to study the "Grand Bazaar" in detail. Kültür Ocağı Vakfı (KOCAV), with the aim of making a new contribution to Süleymaniye, both in terms of its existence and what it represents, plans to address the "Grand Bazaar," primarily in terms of economic life, from various perspectives and organize the "Süleymaniye Symposium 2: The Grand Bazaar."
This symposium is a continuation of the "Süleymaniye: City and Civilization" symposium held by KOCAV in 2007 and compiled as a book in 2010. KOCAV feels a responsibility towards the neighborhood it lives in and wants to fulfill this responsibility. Based on this, KOCAV has included the second Süleymaniye Symposium on its agenda and considered the "Grand Bazaar" and the "economic life formed within the framework of the Grand Bazaar" as the main theme. Subtopics have been determined within this main theme. The symposium, which will take place under the guidance of committees consisting of academics who are experts in their fields, will open new horizons in our scientific world with your contributions.
We are delighted and honored to extend an invitation to you for the international symposium, set to take place in Istanbul on October 25–27, 2024, in collaboration with the Istanbul University Faculty of Arts and the Institute of Turkish Studies.

Süleymaniye Symposium 1
Süleymaniye Symposium 1
This symposium was organised to attract the attention of the authorities and the public, and to contribute for the neighbourhood’s sustainability as a living space. (Kocav President Atty. Ph.D. Ali Ürey)
Süleymaniye, a unique place for our cultural history, has been rapidly tarnished and its historical texture has been torn down in the recent years. With the responsibility of analysing the past and present of this neighbourhood and direct the public attention to this neighbourhood, KOCAV, together with the Eminönü Municipality organised the Süleymaniye Symposium in Daruzziyafe within the Süleymaniye Complex with the headline of “City and Civilization” on November 23-25 November 2007.
In this symposium which took place in two separate halls, Süleymaniye was put under the microscope and discussed with all of its aspects; its problems were identified and solutions were sought after. This symposium which included more than 50 presentations attracted the interest of a large audience.
These presentations were later compiled into a book and was published by KOCAV Yayinlari with the title “Süleymaniye (City and Civilisation).
